Sophia Rein sublimates the in-between
Coming from a lineage of artists - photographers on the one hand, painters on the other - Sophia Rein, with a master's degree in political science and Franco-German business law, after a career in communications, finally found her fulfilment by combining the two arts into one. The Wortshop has been exhibiting the works of this likeable artist for the past two years. She has held the Made in Lux label since February 2019.
Sophia, can you tell us about the process of creating your works?
Originally, I am a painter and I practiced photography in an accessory way, to integrate it into my painting in the form of collage. In 2014, the commune of Schuttrange, where I live, has undertaken the complete renovation of its buildings. Local artists were asked to provide large-format photographs of the commune, which I was then asked to paint on. Subsequently, the commune of Bertrange called on me for the same concept and this time I was photographer and painter (smiles). It was a revelation. This is truly how my artistic blossoming unfolded. Indeed, as a fan of the travel diary, I take a good look at what surrounds me on a daily basis and during my travels ... since then I photograph everything!
How did your collaboration with the Wortshop come about?
I was asked to draw up the end-of-year calendar for Editions Saint Paul 2018, which was a great honour. Thereafter, I was naturally approached for small or large works combining the mixed techniques photography/painting and always in limited editions, to be exposed and sold within the Wortshop. As a Frenchwoman based and flourishing in the Grand Duchy for 14 years, it was a great honour of which I am still not jaded (laughs). I was born in Paris and my inspiration comes from the cities.
I love to capture moments of life and the beauty of architecture in old and modern buildings. The city of Luxembourg has become my little paradise, which I enjoy photographing and then "transforming" in my studio. The Wortshop, which highlights the national heritage, is a suitable place to show the beauty of our capital.
